Creating a Babysafe Home

WINDOWS\Desktop\safehome

  • Tall lamps or coat racks can be pulled over onto a baby or through windows. These should be removed or blocked by furniture to prevent a baby from getting to them.

  • Poisons or toxic materials should not be under the sink. Get them high - out of a baby's reach.

  • When cooking, all pot handles should be turned inward so a baby cannot reach up and pull handles. Use back burners whenever possible.

  • Remove key from fireplace gas jet.

  • All Busy Boxes, mirrors, or any type of crib attachment should be installed on the wall side of a crib. Otherwise, the attachment can be used by a baby to climb up and out of a crib.

  • Turn your hot water heater down to 120° or lower to lessen the chance of accidental burns.

  • And above all else, NEVER LEAVE A BABY UNATTENDED!

Poisonous Plants

  • Separate plants and babies. Some plants are poisonous. A baby can pull leaves or stems off, choke on them, or be poisoned by them.  Get to know your indoor and outdoor plants.

  • Label any new plant you buy.

  • Don't pick or prune flowers or bushes while your child is around. Children love to imitate.

  • If your child ingests a plant, remove all parts still in the mouth. Try to identify the plant. Call Poison Control. If they cannot identify the plant by your description, take the plant to your nearest plant nursery for identification. Call Poison Control again and follow their instructions.
